Tips

Hold yourself back from filling in every square inch with watercolor. Leave the white of the page to convey the bright highlights in moving water. To create contrast and suggest depth, use darks adjacent to the whites.

Paul’s calligraphic line work describes a turbulent creek with water swirling over and around the rocky bank. Notice how the direction of line follows the direction of water and dense lines create shadow areas. The white of the page effectively conveys sunlight and foam.
