Howie and Dave wait by the gate. Clarence poised at the front door. Charlie on Jess further up. Everyone else ranged out. A thumbs up from Blowers to Howie. A thumbs up from Howie to Clarence.
The door goes in with a single solid kick. Meredith goes first, nose to the ground. Clarence, Dave and Howie swiftly following.
‘Looks empty,’ Clarence says quietly. ‘I’ll check the back.’
‘Dave, you go up,’ Howie says. ‘I’ll do the front rooms.’
The house feels empty. Meredith isn’t reacting, there’s a layer of undisturbed dust on the floor and the air has that trapped stale odour but it’s a big house so care is still taken. A detached cottage on the outskirts of a town down a quiet lane with a distinct lack of death or destruction showing anywhere.
Howie walks through the living room, feeling a sudden pang of homesickness at the sight of a house preserved so neat and tidy. The large leather sofa facing the flat screen television. An open fireplace. Rugs on the polished wooden floor. A dog bed off to one side covered in fine white hairs. He spots the coffee mug on the side table at the end of the sofa, half full too with a layer of mould growing on the surface of the once liquid contents.
An ornate curved doorway leads into a dining room filled with a gorgeous dark wood table and matching dining chairs. Display cabinets full of liquors, spirits and wines.
‘Boss?’ Clarence calls.
‘In here mate,’ Howie calls back, spotting the envelope propped against an empty vase on the table.
‘Nothing,’ Clarence says, walking through the living room. ‘The electric box is switched off…’
‘Clear, Mr Howie.’
‘Thanks, Dave.’
‘What’s that?’ Clarence asks, nodding at the envelope in Howie’s hands.
‘Just found it,’ Howie says, he turns it over, noticing the flap is tucked in rather than glued down. A single sheet of paper inside that instantly takes him back twenty one days to the letter his mum and dad left in their house. A grunt, a frown and he unfolds the sheet to read the neat flowing script.
