That’s what I’m talking about! See how naturally it happens?

Now, Richard asked me to show you the fine details about something he said earlier: rapport isn’t only about your body or tone of voice, it’s also about the language you use with others. In particular, when people communicate with you, they reveal how they are representing the world by the words that they use.

So, let’s take a little step back for clarity. By now you have probably begun to recognize how our brain maps reality. We have five senses that we use to take information in from the world and so it makes sense that we have five ways to represent this information to ourselves. Basically it boils down to internal images, sounds and feelings, the other senses – smell and taste – being somewhat more limited in scope. In NLP, these modalities are better known as representational systems.

Richard has already given you a fine example of how Virginia Satir worked with these representational systems and has shown you how to take control of those representations by changing their submodalities – that is, the quality of the representation. What I’m saying here is that although all human beings experience the world through the same five senses, not everyone is aware of reality in the same way. Some of us prefer thinking in terms of visual images, others have a keen ear for sounds and words, and then there are those who rely primarily on bodily sensations to make sense of the world. Now, that doesn’t mean we are that ‘type’ of person, but it does allow us to know how a person is thinking in a particular context.

Joe’s thoughts went back to his relationship with his girlfriend. She seems to really ‘focus’ a lot more on the visual aspects, he thought. It’s incredible that I never noticed that before being told about these representational systems.
