Up to this point, we have focused only on the first question as we demonstrated how teachers can place students along the dynamic translanguaging progressions on different tasks, at different times, and from different perspectives. Here we add the second important dimension to the translanguaging design for assessment—whether the performance is undertaken independently, with assistance, or not at all.

We developed the Teacher’s Assessment Tool for Translanguaging Classrooms to help teachers look more closely at students’ general linguistic and language-specific performances within the context of their translanguaging units of instruction; we include a blank form in Appendix A.6.1. This tool is organized around the academic demands of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Language Arts Standards for reading, writing, listening, speaking and language. This tool also provides space for teachers to observe students’ performances for evidence of their understanding, creativity, and curiosity relative to the essential ideas of the unit, both when they are using the full features of their linguistic repertoires and when they are exclusively using features of one specific language or another. Teachers of different subject areas can adapt this template to address the standards of their disciplines, with attention to specific content and language demands of a particular curricular unit of instruction.
