Chapter 8

“A watched pot never boils,” Allie said, giving Madison a playful shove as she carried another box of handmade lavender soap into the store room. “I’m sure the kids are fine with Wade.”

Madison had been working all day, setting the gift shop to rights, when she went into the store room to get a few more items for display. Some of Allie's products had been featured on a morning news show in Twin Falls, and suddenly, people were coming from all over the state to purchase some of Allie's lavender products.

"Here, let me help you." Madison grabbed some of the items out of Allie's arms, and helped her set them with the rest of the soaps.

"Thank you. You're a lifesaver."

"Don't mention it. It looks like you're finally catching up on all the orders."

Allie nodded. "Yes. I'm sorry I haven't been in here to help you as much lately, but creation is what I do, and the business stuff is beyond me."

Madison laughed as her cousin threw up her arms. It was true that Allie didn't have much business sense, but she always thought that the other woman gave herself far less credit than she deserved.

"Maybe, but you've really grown your business. Just a few months ago, you'd lost everything in the Christmas fire. But with your new barn, and the publicity from the barn raising, it seems like your business is better than ever."

Allie grabbed a box from under the table. "Yes, and that's exactly what I want to talk you about. The business end is making me crazy, and you've done a fantastic job of running the shop with my attention being so diverted.”

Allie gestured around the inside of the gift shop. "Even though my employees do a nice job of keeping things looking straightened, you've added touches that make it extra special. My inventory has never been more accurate or up-to-date, and all details are always perfectly taken care of. No more calls from vendors because I forgot to put a bill in the mail."

High praise, and yet Madison didn't see it as being anything special. "It's what I've done all these years running a household. You keep your records in order, and you make sure the bills are paid on time."

Madison shrugged as she pulled out the tablet and added, "I had to get even better at it once Dave left. I learned very quickly how to maximize what I had and to keep track of everything."

“But that’s exactly what I mean.” Allie yanked the tablet out of her hands. “All this? This is Greek to me. I barely even know how to work this device, let alone input all the information the way you’re doing. And then, to do it right now, without being on a time crunch because of some weird tax deadline…”

Madison couldn’t help laughing. “Tax deadlines aren’t weird. They’re consistent for planning purposes.”

“Like I ever know what day it is.”

“You have a point. But that’s why you have so many people helping you,” Madison said, smiling.
