Chapter 56
I didnât get back home until four oâclock. There was a lot to like about my day. An hour later, Grayson called, much to my delight.
âI just wondered if you were having spaghetti for dinner tonight,â he joked. âI sure enjoyed it, as well as the dessert.â I chuckled at his dry humor.
âI could make it again if you like,â I teased back. âThe kitchen is just as we left it. I just donât understand how noodles managed to get everywhere they did.â Grayson joined me in laughter.
âMy memory has no regrets,â he sweetly noted.
âSo, seriously, Grayson, how were things when you returned home?â
âVery quiet. I snuck upstairs like a tardy teenager and got a few more hours of sleep.â
âShe never said anything?â
âNot so far. Did you eventually move off the floor?â
âNot until Puff walked across my face!â
He chuckled. âAre you coming to the chamber breakfast meeting tomorrow at the Waterfront Grill?â
âOh, I havenât thought about it. Are you going?â
âYes. Iâd love to see you.â
âWill you save me a seat?â
âIâll try. I really have a lot to do, but I feel I need to be there. Iâm hoping they have spaghetti.â
I chuckled. I hung up with the comfort Iâd see him again in twenty-four hours. I wasnât hungry since Iâd had lunch and too much strudel. I made a fire to enjoy, and then my phone rang. I looked and saw it was Carole.
âWhat a nice surprise!â I responded. âHow is everything?â
âGood. How about you?â
âPretty good. I just made a fire.â
âI just felt I needed to tell you what Jill has been sharing with me.â
âOh. Is this about Austen?â
âYes. Heâs really depressed and seldom comes into the office according to her sources. I donât think heâs recovering as he had hoped.â
âWell, his kind of recovery takes time. Heâs never been a very patient person.â
âI just thought if he heard from you, it might cheer him up a bit.â
I paused. âIâll give it some thought. Who knows whatâs going on in his mind?â
âOn a happier note, I got a call from the kitchen shop on the top of the hill, and they ordered more cookbooks. They told me theyâre selling well as Christmas gifts. Iâm thrilled people are buying them!â
âIâm happy for you, Carole. That shop does pretty well. Howâs Linda?â
âSheâs good. Her granddaughters keep her busy. She, too, has had an order or two of her jewelry.â
âTell her hello for me.â
I hung up with a sad feeling in my gut. If I responded to Austen, heâd know it was pity on my part. Will he always be in my life in one way or another?â My cell rang again almost immediately after Iâd hung up. I wondered it if was Carole calling back to tell me something sheâd forgotten. It ended up being Ericka.
âHi, Claire. Iâm sorry itâs been so long since weâve talked, but Iâve been preoccupied. Hey, what do you know about Cher and her boss? She seems quite taken with him. Do you know him? Is she getting herself in trouble?â
I had to chuckle to myself about her line of questioning.
