Chapter 10

Alyssa

I put my car in park in front of Jude's house just as a man in a dark leather jacket and denim is walking out through their front door. Tatum and her father are waving and saying their goodbyes as I step out of my car and start up their driveway. The mystery man smirks as he passes by and throws a cocky nod in my direction, like he knows something I don't. My eyes follow him. I can't shake the feeling that I know this guy, but I can't quite figure out where I know him from. I wait to turn back around until he's climbed into the backseat of the luxury SUV that's parked just in front of my rental, which I assume is some kind of high price driving service or maybe The Machine's goons have descended. Jude and his daughter are staring at me with questions in their eyes as I make my way up the driveway. I'm sure they are wondering why this woman is back at their house, uninvited and unannounced, for the umpteenth time this week. They're probably also wondering why I was staring at the guy who just left. That's when it hits me. I remember where I know him from. Was that? I ask, pointing over my shoulder.

“Yeah,” Jude says, motioning for me to come inside. “That was my brother Jackson. He steps back enough to allow me to enter through the doorway, but I still bump into his chest as I'm trying to make my way inside the house. The scent coming from his cologne is strong and soothing to my senses. It makes me want to stay in this exact moment for the rest of the night. I try to recover, before they can notice that I've been swept off my feet by Jude Jericho yet again. Hopeful that he won't notice what just happened, I look up and find his eyes peering into mine. He's sporting a wide, toothy grin, which means he caught the effect he just had on me. Great.

If I don't break the silence in the room right now. I might do something we will both regret in the morning. So, I fight my instincts and my hormones, looking for a reason... any reason to distract both of us from the tension growing in the room. “Did the label send him, or is he just stopping by out of brotherly love and concern?”

“Oh, it was the label,” Jude admits with a hesitation in his voice, which makes me instantly regret changing the mood in the room. It went from being perfect to now feeling heavy and overwhelming to the point it's almost suffocating. “The label's starting to show their hand,” he admits with a defeated sigh.

“What did they do now?” I ask through gritted teeth. “Do I even want to know?” I'm guessing that I don't.

He shakes his head and lets out a long slow, steady breath before continuing. His hesitation makes my heart clench in my chest.
