If you want to try a hydrogen peroxide regime, Bill’s formula is simple: Pour a cup of hydrogen peroxide into a basin of lukewarm water and, eyes closed, duck your head in. Blow bubbles through your nose. Dry off afterward. Don’t worry about your hair: The hydrogen peroxide is too diluted to bleach it.

Remember, however, that hydrogen peroxide is H2O2, not H2O. Its vapors can be potentially dangerous; concentrated doses can be very corrosive, and even low doses can bleach clothes if spattered on them. Most important, it is dangerous if swallowed: As it decomposes in the stomach it releases large quantities of gas, potentially causing internal bleeding.

Just to be extra safe, keep the twenty-four-hour phone number of the National Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) posted prominently in your home.
