CHAPTER 28

Sometime after midday, Violet awoke wrapped in the arms and wings of a vampire, knowing she’d just had the best sleep of her life. It had been solid. Not once did she wake afraid of being fed on. She also didn’t wake early, a habit ingrained in her since her childhood competitive need to always beat her brothers. They would get up to train for whatever sport held their fancy at that time, and she took great joy in beating them to the breakfast table.

Resting against the soft cotton on Indigo’s chest, this went against everything she stood for. Had stood for. But she couldn’t muster the effort to care. All she cared about was this moment. The warmth beneath her cheek, his beating heart, his wings cocooning them, the orange sunset glimmering through the membrane. She pushed up his shirt and traced patterns on his skin, marveling at how the sunlight disappeared into the shadow snake like a black hole.

The snake’s shadowy head was at his neck, out of his shirt collar, and the eyes seemed to watch her warily, letting her know that in some deep, hidden place, Indigo was worthy of protection too. That it would fight to keep him safe. A stupid thought, considering it wasn’t alive, just a manifestation of his power. She shook the idea away, but the feeling stayed. She wasn’t alone. Not anymore.

The blue from her arm markings added to the prism of color in her little bubble world, creating a wash that reminded her of balmy sunsets on a Hawaiian beach. That island might not exist anymore, but others had been born. She was on one of them. For the first time since forever, she started wondering what her future might look like. There was no doubt that Indigo would be in it. He continued to surprise her and melt her resistance every minute of the day.

Maybe her shame and guilt had a purpose. Maybe it meant that she’d actually cared, that Indigo had been right at the springs when he said she was the perfect person to understand how precious life was. Moments like these were worth fighting for.

She traced a larger vein in his wing from top to bottom. When she hit the large boney edge of his wing, she dipped along the skeletal limb before following smaller capillaries. This was definitely real, not part of the nightmare she’d been living. With the next light scrape of her touch, Indigo shuddered awake. He captured her wrist with a low growl and halted her movement.

“Those bits are sensitive,” he warned, voice scratchy and oh so sexy. “Only touch them if you mean business, Vi.”

Her cheek moved against his chest as she smiled. “I like that nickname best.”

“I’ll call you Vi if you call me Indi.”

She rolled inward and kissed him over the fabric, reveling in his responding rumble of pure, masculine appreciation. His wings loosened, a silent plea, perhaps, for her to climb on top. She slid her arm over his stomach, and—

The door flung open, banging against the wall.
