I tried to extend our visit at Nicole’s as much as possible, knowing that as soon as we got in the car to go home, we’d have to talk about what just happened with Stefan.

Unfortunately, Brice wasn’t about to be easily distracted. He was curt, just short of rude (because he doesn’t do “rude”), and he kept edging me toward the front door. Physically nudging me at first and then grabbing my elbow and steering me, he had us saying, “Hello,” “We had fun,” “See you tomorrow at church,” and “Goodbye,” in less than five minutes. Then he practically raced me to the Jeep to claim the driver’s seat.

Before he had even backed out of the driveway or I had my seatbelt fastened, he was off. “What a piece of work! I can’t believe he had the— the stones to talk to you like that!”

“But—”

“I know he always talks to you like that, and I’d rather not be told that, because it makes me think seriously un-Christian thoughts. And if he thinks he’s going to have the privilege of saying a word to you ever again if he insists on talking to you like that, he has another think coming.”

“Yes, but—”

“The utter disrespect, the… the callous disregard for you as a person! I doubt he would speak to an animal as profanely and obscenely as he spoke to you, someone who has time and again shown tremendous patience with his vulgarity and ugliness, someone who had the decency to go through with a pregnancy that resulted from a horrible experience with a horrible person such as himself, someone who endured unspeakable pain as a result of going through with that pregnancy! And he has the audacity to verbally abuse you? He should be bowing down in front of you and kissing your feet and asking what he can do to make amends for every despicable thing he’s ever said, thought, or done to you!”

“You shouldn’t have hung up on him,” I state quietly from my side of the car.

“What? I wish I could do more than that. I have half a mind to get on a plane to New York and wring his neck.”

“Can I have my phone back?”

“Not if you’re going to call him back.”

“I’m not.”

When he takes his hand from the steering wheel to dig my phone out of his pocket, I see how badly he’s shaking.

“Brice. Calm down. Or pull over.”

“I’m fine.” He puts his trembling hand to his forehead and rubs at his hairline. “I mean, I’m not fine. I’m not at all okay with what he said to you, but I’m fine to drive.”

“His call wasn’t even about Secret.”

His hand drops. So does his jaw. After a beat, he asks, “Then why was he screaming at you?”

I’m not sure if the real reason will make him angrier or if he’ll find it mildly funny and be as relieved as I am that Stefan still doesn’t know. “I couldn’t tell him for sure if I had any show openings in the next month.
