I tried to extend our visit at Nicoleâs as much as possible, knowing that as soon as we got in the car to go home, weâd have to talk about what just happened with Stefan.
Unfortunately, Brice wasnât about to be easily distracted. He was curt, just short of rude (because he doesnât do ârudeâ), and he kept edging me toward the front door. Physically nudging me at first and then grabbing my elbow and steering me, he had us saying, âHello,â âWe had fun,â âSee you tomorrow at church,â and âGoodbye,â in less than five minutes. Then he practically raced me to the Jeep to claim the driverâs seat.
Before he had even backed out of the driveway or I had my seatbelt fastened, he was off. âWhat a piece of work! I canât believe he had theâ the stones to talk to you like that!â
âButââ
âI know he always talks to you like that, and Iâd rather not be told that, because it makes me think seriously un-Christian thoughts. And if he thinks heâs going to have the privilege of saying a word to you ever again if he insists on talking to you like that, he has another think coming.â
âYes, butââ
âThe utter disrespect, the⦠the callous disregard for you as a person! I doubt he would speak to an animal as profanely and obscenely as he spoke to you, someone who has time and again shown tremendous patience with his vulgarity and ugliness, someone who had the decency to go through with a pregnancy that resulted from a horrible experience with a horrible person such as himself, someone who endured unspeakable pain as a result of going through with that pregnancy! And he has the audacity to verbally abuse you? He should be bowing down in front of you and kissing your feet and asking what he can do to make amends for every despicable thing heâs ever said, thought, or done to you!â
âYou shouldnât have hung up on him,â I state quietly from my side of the car.
âWhat? I wish I could do more than that. I have half a mind to get on a plane to New York and wring his neck.â
âCan I have my phone back?â
âNot if youâre going to call him back.â
âIâm not.â
When he takes his hand from the steering wheel to dig my phone out of his pocket, I see how badly heâs shaking.
âBrice. Calm down. Or pull over.â
âIâm fine.â He puts his trembling hand to his forehead and rubs at his hairline. âI mean, Iâm not fine. Iâm not at all okay with what he said to you, but Iâm fine to drive.â
âHis call wasnât even about Secret.â
His hand drops. So does his jaw. After a beat, he asks, âThen why was he screaming at you?â
Iâm not sure if the real reason will make him angrier or if heâll find it mildly funny and be as relieved as I am that Stefan still doesnât know. âI couldnât tell him for sure if I had any show openings in the next month.
