The Roof Deck
The roof deck at Earthwood Sauna is octagonal and consists of eight facets of recycled spruce 2 x 6 tongue-and-groove silo boards, covered by a 3/8-inch chipboard. The boards span each pie-shaped section between rafters.
Begin the planking at the outside edge, allowing a 2-inch overhang beyond the rafters, as in figure 5-11. Because the rafters themselves overhang the cordwood wall by 14 inches, the total roof overhang is about 16 inches at the points of the octagon, reducing to a 12-inch overhang at the midpoints of the octagon’s edges where the walls curve out under the roof.
The first facet of planking is easy. Set the outermost board first and work your way in. Let the boards run a little past the centerline of each rafter and nail with two nails at each end of the planks; just be careful to keep the nails well inside of the center of the 4-inch-wide rafters. Next, snap a chalk line on the planking directly over the centerline of each rafter. Set your circular saw to a depth just 1.16 inch deeper than the thickness of the planking, and cut both edges straight. The saw will just tickle the top of the rafters. When you’re done you’ll have a nice pie-shaped facet of planking covering the rafter space.
The second facet requires a little more work. One end of each plank has to be cut with a 22½-degree angle (you can use an adjustable angle or Speed Square to mark the precise angle) before it is installed; as with the first facet, let the board run a bit long. After all the planks are nailed, snap a line over the rafter centerline to mark the ragged ends of the planking, then trim the facet clean with a single straight cut.
