[4] The way you can easily find things I’m referring to in the Bible is to use the references I give. First the name of the book is mentioned—for example, ‘Matthew’; secondly the chapter number is given—in this first case, chapter 5; and thirdly the sentence number is given—this time, number 44.
[5] The word ‘Christ’ refers to God’s promised king, who will rule forever.
6. The Bible—the guidebook for the journey
My family likes hiking a lot. Well, perhaps I should be more truthful and say that I like hiking a lot, my wife likes it a bit, and the kids just come along.
I really like checking out new tracks when we travel to different places. One family holiday we were exploring a national park on the eastern coast of Australia. I knew there was an official track relatively close by but I wasn’t sure exactly how to get to the beginning of it. Being the adventurous type, I said to my family with enthusiastic confidence, “Don’t worry, the track goes along the coast. As long as we keep walking towards the coast we’ll get to it pretty soon.” We did get to the track, but it took 45 minutes of trying to avoid being scratched as we walked through thick scrub, and 45 minutes of listening to four worried voices saying, “Dad, are you sure this is right? Aren’t we lost? Do you really think this is the way to go?”
If only I’d read the guidebook first, things would have been better. The guidebook mentioned the thick scrub. It had a map to show us how far off track we were, and it would have reassured my family when they were worried we were lost.
Guidebooks can keep us from making costly mistakes when we’re travelling. If you don’t read them, then like me, you can end up with a face full of scratches—or a lot worse! The more complicated a journey is, the more you need a guidebook.
But normal life is complicated too. Without a ‘life guidebook’, our journey here can quickly become a series of mistakes, sometimes with very painful consequences.
So where do we go to find wisdom and guidance in this world?
Many people go to their parents. I can think of some great things my parents taught me, like the importance of telling the truth and sticking at things even when they are tough. But my parents would be the first to say that neither they nor their wisdom are perfect.
Wisdom used to be passed down in traditions from generation to generation. However, times change. Most countries in the West have spent the past 50 years unravelling the traditions of the past and developing new ways to live. Traditionally, people went to the Church for wisdom, but like all other sources of wisdom, it has been found wanting. And the effects of misguided wisdom can be catastrophic.
Surely there must be a better way to navigate our way through this
