It was a turbulent week as share markets had dropped in a worldwide panic. The Australian share market suffered one of the biggest plunges in its history following big declines on Wall Street. The Australian market dropped 7.2 per cent in one day, the biggest fall since the market crash of 1987.

The cabinet is meeting to discuss the health care agreement with the states. Wooldridge is giving us a background briefing. And Howard has just got back from CHOGM and meeting Suharto on the way back.114 He obviously enjoyed meeting Nelson Mandela. It was their first meeting. He was impressed by his ‘presence’; Mandela is notably without rancour. Howard liked Mandela’s sense of humour. Mandela said when CHOGM was held in South Africa he would not be president – he’d be standing out the front holding a placard: ‘help the unemployed’.
