Chapter Nine

Am I dead? Tinder slowly opened her eyes, blinking against the filtered sunlight, coming from a window to her right.

No, you passed out, stupid. Because you watched your lover and his brother turn into panthers.

"Shit." She bolted up and glanced around the large bedroom. Her attention caught on several posters pinned on the wall, above a chest of drawers on the left. The centre one was a movie poster…"Top gun?" Tom Cruise leaned against an American jet fighter. "Maverick."

Despite herself, Tinder grinned, it was Hawk-like. He was so not keeping this here.

Tinder froze, what the hell was she thinking? This was not her room, or even their room. She was not in a relationship with him, other than fuck buddies.

She groaned, flopping back against the stuffed pillows, staring up at the slow-turning ceiling fan. Those words sent a wash of dread through her.

Shifter, lover, mate? How long did she know him? Not even two full days. Love at first sight? Ridiculous!

She liked him, a lot, but love? She swore never to get entangled in a relationship again after the hell Nick put her through. One thing was for certain; Hawk was nothing like her ex. Hawk was sweet, funny, if somewhat cocky.

As secrets went, being a panther shifter was a big one. If she told Roads, would the man even believe her? Should she tell him? Wasn't she here to get paid to dig up secrets? What would Roads do if he did believe her? It wasn't only Hawk's life at stake. She suddenly thought about the woman she met at the bar, Sandy, and her baby boy; it was a whole town.

Tinder drew in a deep breath letting it out slowly. Was the money for this assignment worth destroying a whole community?

A knock at the door made her bolt back up. The door cracked and opened slightly. She heaved a sigh of relief when Storm poked her head through.

"Oh, good, you're awake." She pushed the door open with her hip, holding a tray in her hands—plates filled with food, cups and pots.

She frowned, expecting Hawk, but was kind of relieved it wasn't. Still, she had to ask.

"Where's Hawk?"

"Oh, Mum and I banished him. River helped by dragging him over to the company office, where he's no doubt sulking. I thought you could use some female company for a while. Mum and I both know how Hawk can be. How are you feeling?" Storm cruised around the side of the bed and set the tray down, before climbing onto the other side, folding her legs to sit crossed legged.

"Not sure."

"It's a shock to the system, learning about things existing only in fairy tales and stories. Please don't ask if the Easter bunny is real." Storm giggled, pushing the tray towards her.

"Here, eat up. You must be starving by now. Mum, or Maria, is the best cook in the world." She lifted the lid of one of the plates. Tinder inhaled wonderful spicy eggs and fried bacon, making her stomach growl.
