The Battle of Cissa
With his troops adequately rested, it was the summer of 218 BCE when Hannibal eventually set out for the plains of central Italy with tens of thousands of infantry and cavalry behind him. They marched into Gaul, intent for Italy, leaving the newly-conquered territories above the Ebro River in the hands of a contingent guard.
Roman general Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus sailed to Iberia with 20,000 infantrymen, 2,200 cavalrymen, and sixty quinqueremes to meet the Carthaginian threat there.[72] He was welcomed by the Greek cities he stopped at along the way and completely surprised the Carthaginian general Hanno with his presence there. Hanno sent word to Hasdrubal Barca, who marched north with an army of 8,000 foot soldiers and 1,000 cavalrymen to resist the Romans.[73]
Hanno attacked the Romans near a town called Cissa, though he was outnumbered two to one. Hasdrubal and his relief soldiers were too late to join in and provide support for their fellow Carthaginians, and the battle was, therefore, relatively easy for the Romans. They routed Hanno after killing 6,000 of his soldiers.[74] Gnaeus Scipio captured 2,000 enemy soldiers, the Carthaginian camp, and Hanno.[75]
