âIs that who you mean?â asked Coco.
Peggy turned and whimpered. The zombie was heading straight toward themâwith the skeleton and ghost right behind him!
Shaking with fright, Peggy squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for the worst.
âCheck this out,â said a familiar voice.
Huh? Peggy opened one eye and saw the zombie peel off his face.⦠Then she let out a sigh of relief.
âThis is the tree house I built,â Finn said proudly, holding in his hand the scary zombie mask heâd been wearing.
âOh, wow,â said the skeleton, looking up at the tree house. As the skeleton came closer, Peggy recognized Jasmine, the keyboard player in Finnâs band. âItâs wicked!â
âIt can be our band headquarters,â said Finn. Heâd decorated the tree house with his scary jack-oâ-lantern and some bright yellow tape that said DANGERâCRIME SCENE!
The ghost approached and crouched down in front of Peggy. Was this the ghost sheâd heard howling? She growled and sank her teeth into its billowing white form.
âOi, let go!â said the ghost.
But Peggy held on tight and tugged. She wasnât going to let it get away! A white sheet pooled on the ground, revealing a friendly face.
Oh, thought Peggy. It wasnât a ghost after all. It was just Zachâthe bandâs guitar player.
âDo you like our Halloween costumes, Peggy?â he asked, patting her on the head.
âWeâre a death metal band,â said Finn, laughing. âGet it?â
âOur new song totally rocks!â said Jasmine.
âDo you really think your mum will let us play at the Halloween party?â asked Zach.
âCome on,â said Finn. âLetâs go and ask her.â
âSee, Peggy,â said Coco as the band trooped into the house. âThereâs nothing to worry about.â
Feeling a bit silly, Peggy followed the band inside. Mum was in the kitchen, where Chloe and Ruby were helping her bake. The kitchen counter was covered in flourâand so was Ruby.
âHow was your rehearsal?â asked Mum, taking a tray of pumpkin-shaped cookies out of the oven. âYou sounded good out there.â
Chloe grinned as she pressed out more pumpkin shapes with a cutter. âI thought that was Tiger yowling,â she teased her brother.
Finn reached over and helped himself to some cookies cooling on a wire rack, and handed them out to his bandmates.
âNo more,â said Mum, rapping Finnâs hand lightly with a wooden spoon. âThose are for the pug-o-ween party.â
âThese are really good,â said Zach.
âHey, Mum,â said Finn, sharing a piece of his cookie with Peggy. âWe were wondering if we could play a few songs at the party.â
âSure,â Mum said. âThatâs fine.â
âWoo-hoo!â cheered the band, giving each other high fives.
âWeâre going to play games, too,â said Chloe. âBobbing for apples⦠pin the tail on the witchâs cat⦠mummy wrapââ
âHow do you play that?â asked Zach.
Chloe ran to the bathroom and came back with a roll of toilet paper. âIâll show you!â she said. Then she wound toilet paper all around him, wrapping him up like an Egyptian mummy. The others laughed as Zach pretended to be a mummy, his arms stretched out in front of him.
âIâm not going to be a mummy for Halloween,â said Ruby.
