Chapter 8
My computer was booting up. The coffee was blip-blip-blip-ping along with 3 minutes to go on the timer. So far my batteries were handling the job without the boost of the generator. If the inverter started beeping 'low voltage' I could still run on the laptop's internal battery for awhile by using my trailer batteries for the start-up. It was 4 am. My generator would sound like a freight train in the wee hour stillness. I was relieved I didn't have to crank on my trusty Champion 1500 with its thick oil at this hour to get required power and so antsy to get this done and over with that I could barely contain myself.
Two minutes on the timer – whir, boot on the computer – flash drive demanding to get into the slot.
Beep, beep, beep went the timer. 'Enter your password' went the computer – get the infallible password in right and SNAP went the flash drive. “Yes! Open it so I can see the files!”
Pour my first cup of fresh, hot, coffee and watch the files upload to my computer. It was names – hundreds of names next to little folder icons, Joan Freed included. I moused over – text and jpg files were the contents – words and pictures – 177 megabytes of words and pictures. I clicked on my file. Nothing. I clicked again. 'Windows can't open this file. What would you like Windows to do?'
I couldn't make myself say what I would like windows to do – I drank my coffee and stared at the files. I didn't see a listing for 'Shyster Bob', but I did see one for Bob Williams – have I ever heard his last name? There was also one for Robert Taylor. AND a file folder for Bobbie Martin. There was also one for Roberta Taylor. I clicked on it. It opened! I nearly fell off the bench. I clicked on another, it wouldn't open. And then another – it did open. Bazaar!
I refilled my coffee and pondered the options, my hands shaking.
Option 1 was to first copy these files onto my own flash drive and stash it somewhere safe. I did it.
Next delete the folder with my name on it from the hot, original flash drive. “Good. That's better,” I said. “My low profile is protected.”
Step 3 is to drink my coffee and re-open the Roberta Taylor file and find out what data and pictures these gals were collecting.
I did that, too. There – in Roberta Taylor's file – was shyster Bob, looking very much like a woman. Did he have an identical twin? Rather difficult to have identical height, weight, arm length, etc. in a boy and a girl – it seems, although I've never studied the phenom of twins.
The mouse moved to the Robert Taylor file and I clicked on it – it opened – and there was shyster Bob again – as a man. I read both files. Roberta's file's first entry was some 5 years ago.
