Our resource base will greatly determine profit centers. It includes the natural, community and personal resources you have available. I wouldn’t consider root cellar vegetables as a viable profit center if I didn’t have the resource base to support it: good loam soil, a large glacial ridge for my cellar and access to a community demanding winter vegetables.
How it Starts
I believe every farm should start with three key profit centers. Consider potential enterprises, but leave room to flex your creativity as you gain experience and familiarity with your land, skills and community. These profit centers could be three cash crops: carrots, salad and melons. Or this could be more diverse: apples, garden crops and chickens. This latter is more likely to evolve into three enterprises: orchard production, diversified market garden and pastured meat. The first example should evolve by slowly trialing companionable profit centers until a suitable enterprise emerge. Maybe you begin growing your own vegetable seeds, you see how much you are saving and begin improving your methods until a seed company emerges as an enterprise.
