“Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets” (v. 23). The phrases “on account of the Son of Man” and “for so their fathers did to the prophets” make it clear that Jesus is not extolling poverty, hunger, sorrow, or rejection for their own sakes, as if there could be some virtue in those things. Rather, He is extolling them when they are endured for His sake or, as He says in the Sermon on the Mount, for the sake of “righteousness.” Here is the blessedness of one who practices the teaching of Christ even to the point of personal deprivation or the hatred of others.

Such a person obviously has an ordering of life in which Christ, rather than himself, is the center. And with that change it is not hard to go and do the other things the Lord speaks about:

“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.… Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:27–31, 37–38)
