The corridor stretched far into the distance, lit by eternal flaming torches screwed to the walls. Mad Dog pattered along at a trot and Philly and I had to jog to keep up. At the far end, the passage was crossed by another corridor. We followed the pooch for what seemed like hours, first to the left and then to the right – until we had lost all sense of direction. Each passage was so like the last that it wasn’t long before both of us started to feel befuddled and confused.

‘Don’t lose sight of Mad Dog, or we’ll be in real trouble,’ said Philly shakily. ‘We’ll never find our way out of here.’

Just as she said this, she tripped over a lone skeleton stretched out on the floor and covered in swathes of ancient cobwebs. Its bony hand held an old map which I pulled from its grasp and tried to read. But most of the lines had completely faded away.
