Chapter Fourteen

“Vincent, we’ve got to get ready soon. We’ll be late for dinner,” I say, trying to get him to budge from the computer.

“Relax, it’s early. I’ve just got two more e-mails to send out and then I’m done.”

“Well don’t be long, Emma wants us there at seven.”

“And we will be if you leave me alone for two minutes so I can get this done.” He smiles.

I narrow my eyes at him. “I’ll be waiting with Katie in the living room.”

“Love you,” he says with a grin.

I hide my own smile from him and head towards the living room. Katie is there, texting on her phone. “James is asking what time we’re picking him up.”

“Tell him it all depends on your brother and how quickly we can get him out of the house.”

She looks up. “Hasn’t he finished yet? He just can’t switch off from work, he’s impossible.”

“I’ll go and get the wine and the dessert Megan made from the fridge, to save time. That way we’ll be ready to leave when Vincent finally appears.”

“Do you want some help?”

“No, it’s fine, I can handle it.” As I go to the kitchen I hear the intercom buzz. “I’ll get it,” I call, not wanting Vincent to waste any time answering the door.

I pick up the phone. “Hi Ms. Phillips,” says the guard.

“Hi Shaun.”

“Um… I have someone here with me, who wants to speak to Mr. Moore.” He’s slightly hesitant.

“Okay, who is it?” I ask, cursing whoever it is for the perfect timing.

“She… um… says she’s his mother.”

I freeze, not sure I heard correctly. “What?”

“She said she’s his mother,” he repeats.

I stay silent, as my mind comes to grips with what I’m hearing. “I think there’s been some kind of mistake.”

“Who is it?” Vincent says.

I spin round, not really knowing what to tell him.

“Amy?” he asks, tension forming in his features.

I can’t reply. My tongue has formed a knot.

“For fucks sake’s, answer me!”

“It’s your mother,” I mumble.

His face turns white as snow. “What?” he manages to say.

“Some woman saying she’s your mother.”

“I don’t have a mother,” he snaps. “Tell Shaun not to let her in.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes I’m fucking sure!” He storms off, and as I watch him, Katie glares at us from the living room door, her brow knitted with worry.

“I’ll get back to you Shaun, just give me a few minutes.” I hang up the phone and follow Vincent to the living room. “Don’t you think you should hear what she has to say?” I say to Vincent. “If she came here, it has to be important.”

“I don’t care what she wants,” he snarls. “I cared thirty years ago, when I started getting beatings every day and she did nothing about it. That was important, not what she has to say now!”

My heart sinks. The bitterness he feels towards his mother could be mitigated if he talks to her, even if she only came to apologise. It wouldn’t repair the damage completely, but it might help. “Please reconsider Vincent. You have nothing to lose.
