The End Of War In Oregon

News was received tonight that a party of Packers, three in number with 25 pack mules, were attacked on Siskiyou Mountain by a party of Modoc Indians and one man killed. The other two fled to the valley, raised a party of men, returned and found a dead body and three dead mules, they also found nine of their mules alive. 13 of them were driven off by the red skins. 20 volunteers started on their trail, but we have not heard from them since. This occurred on Sunday morning last, about 40 miles from here, near the scene of the wagon massacre last fall. So, it seems that now the war in Oregon has about dried up, and that we are to have a touch of it here.

The Modocs have been at peace with us during the Oregon war. Extracts from a letter written by General L. of the Oregon volunteers dated June 30: “The governor has ordered the disbanding of all the troops now in service in Southern Oregon. I have just returned from the coast, having made the campaign of the entire length of the rivers and drove all the Indians into the camp of the regulars. Besides killing a great many, capturing about 100 and delivering them to the Indian agent. All have now come in and delivered up their arms and are to be removed to the reserve in Yamhill County. 600 have gone and about 800 are at Port Orford.

Tyhee John’s band have not yet delivered up their arms but had promised to do so in the two days after my leaving Port Orford, on the 26th. I am sure he will do so, as some of his warriors have come in, amongst them is one of the old John’s sons and one of his best warriors. The trip up the big Meadows to the mouth of Rogue River was very successful, my command driving the Indians and whipping them at every place we met them. Just before my command met the regulars under Colonel Buchanan, a part of the troops 103 strong under Captain Smith were defeated by the Indians under old John. Smith having 11 killed and 21 wounded.” So, it seems at last we are going to have peace again on the border, that is if we can keep the Modocs down on our side of the boundary line.

Tyhee John has been the great terror of the settlers ever since the war broke out and has been principally instrumental in prolonging it to the present time. His tribe are the bravest of the brave.
