A Very Specific Convergence

Rarely does one specific archaeological discovery find direct mention in the biblical texts, for reasons that we have noted frequently. The biblical writers’ cosmic overview often makes them oblivious to the details of ordinary life. However, the excavations at Dan, on the northern border, recently brought to light a large plaza outside the city gate. Here there was a series of several unique structures that suggest extramural “bazaars,” or marketplaces. One is inevitably reminded of the ḥuṣṣôt (outer installations) that Ahab was given permission to construct in Aramean Damascus, and that the Arameans were granted reciprocally in Samaria (1 Kings 20:34). These were like “duty-free” shops (above).
