Like sound, light can disturb your sleep and cause early waking, which then leads to poor quality rest and irritability, leaving you feeling negative and ill-prepared for the day ahead. While darkness causes your brain to produce melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy, light helps it produce serotonin, too much of which will make you feel more awake. To help keep your bedroom as dark as possible, make sure any electrical items such as stereos are turned off, not on standby, as the lights from their displays may keep you awake. Your mobile phone, if you must use it as an alarm, should be in bedside mode so that it does not emit light. You should also choose thick, dark curtains or blinds, to ensure outside light does not intrude and wake you. If light is a particular nuisance for you, try using blackout curtains or blinds in your bedroom, or using an eye mask while you sleep.
