Fiery pain seared across Jane’s back. She screamed out, briefly opening her eyes to see Pestilence and David’s face right next to hers. She screamed louder when she began to burn, but again, she was forcefully ripped from reality and into a memory.

Heavy. That was how Jane would have described Pestilence’s current state. His head and mind felt weighed down. She blinked as he did and took in the beautiful woman in front of them. She had dark, luscious brown hair and ruby lips. Megaera, Pestilence thought.

“How will he help me?”

Jane nearly gasped at the sound of Lancelot’s voice. Inside Pestilence’s body, though, she merely tilted her head in Lancelot’s direction and calmly took in the other vampires and demons standing around him. Mania was there, and so was the Devil.

“Have you not read any of the holy texts?” the Devil asked with an amused smile at Lancelot. “He can bring disease. Even one that would allow the dead to scour the earth.”

Lancelot didn’t look impressed as he gazed back at Pestilence. Jane realized Megaera was touching her arm, no, Pestilence’s arm, and she was whispering endlessly. The words were foreign to Jane, but the haunting melody seemed to only cloud her mind.

“Zombies?” Lancelot laughed.

“You are a werewolf, Lancelot. Your greatest rivals are vampires.” The Devil smiled. “Do not assume other horrors are fictitious.”

“How will a plague of zombies help me? Arthur and the knights are the best. An animated corpse will do little against them.”

The Devil shrugged. “Refuse my offer, then. I do not see your master jumping to offer you any upper hand against them.”

Lancelot scowled, crossing his arms over his bare chest. “I did not say I wish to refuse. I simply want to understand how this is beneficial.”

“A dead corpse has no weakness, save destruction of the brain that still allows its nerves to fire off orders. Being dead also removes the hindrance God has placed on all other cursed immortals.”

Lancelot’s eyes widened. “You mean—”

“Yes, your creations would be immune to silver, and if successful, they could challenge a vampire during daylight. Of course, I do not expect the undead mutations to annihilate the knights on their own. However, they will be forced to fight you day and night, and you will no longer have the hindrance of the others who seek redemption by aiding Arthur.”

“The humans . . . What of them?” Lancelot asked.

The Devil tilted his head, observing Lancelot quietly. “The humans are the only beings capable of initially succumbing to this disease. We will use the men you select to transfer a mutated virus.”

Lancelot seemed hesitant.

“Do not worry, Lance,” said the Devil. “The human race will survive. Yes, some will fall victim to the undead, but a few casualties will be worth sacrificing. You seek revenge, do you not?”

“I do,” Lancelot said quickly. “I just—if the plague were to escape us”—he shifted his eyes toward Pestilence—“if the humans die, we all die.”

The Devil placed a comforting hand on Lancelot’s shoulder. “You will enjoy your new pets.
