Another expression that Giussani would submit to Ratzinger in 1995 is in perfect continuity with this: “Mystery and sign coincide.”70 In order to reiterate once again that, if the Word was made flesh, “it is in flesh that we find It, identically [. . .] I said that the Mystery is one and the same with the sign.”71

One day a young professor told Giussani that someone had left CL claiming that Giussani’s statement that “Mystery and sign coincide” was heretical. Giussani recognized that the expression “left everyone a bit rattled, to tell the truth. That’s what made me hesitate to repeat it [. . .], and that’s why I included it among the terms I showed to Ratzinger.” Then he said to the person who had told him about the situation:
