Pilgrims today can visit Shepherds’ Field, an expansive and sweeping plane covered in grassy vegetation and spotted with brush, which offers a view of the Bethlehem skyline in the background. Shepherds still tend their sheep there and make use of a number of stone sheepfolds. While kings were often spoken of as being ‘shepherds’ of their people, actual shepherds were not held in high regard and were often associated with low living and shifty dealings, as Raymond Brown points out. Yet it was to the shepherds that the angels first proclaimed the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. An angel appeared to the shepherds in the fields proclaiming, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord” (Lk. 2:10-11). The angel then described the place of Jesus’ birth, and a chorus of angels sang out the famous words, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Lk. 2:14). The shepherds went to visit the child and became the first outside his family to believe in Jesus as the Christ.
