For almost eight-hundred years people have prayed for help finding lost things, among countless other requests of the beneficent S. Anthony.

V. Evangelical Doctor of the Church

Even though Doctors of the Church had been promoted earlier, it was Pope Benedict (1740-1758) who established the benchmark for the lofty distinction. One must be officially designated by the papacy which, as of this writing, has recognized 33 doctors (docere = Latin for ‘to teach’) for their holiness and scholarship. Of note, Pope Benedict announced May 10, 2012 that Hildegard of Bingen will be officially promoted to Doctor of the Church, although not canonized, on October 7, 2012. Essentially, each of these Doctors of the Church is noted for their contributions to theology and doctrine.
