* Unfortunately, Adenauer broke his silence after lunch next day with a long monologue about Communism, the World and History. Macmillan admitted that he went to sleep. It is to be hoped that everyone else did too: to judge from the transcript only John Foster Dulles could have endured the sermon.
* One evening at dinner the Federal Plenipotentiary in West Berlin boasted that he had some superb Mosel in his cellar – a grave error in the presence of the Chancellor who would brook no rivals in connoisseurship of wine. At the end of the meal the man was encouraged to go off and play cards with his friends. While he was away Adenauer sent a car to his house to fetch a few bottles. When the wine proved as good as its owner claimed, he was summoned back to help drink it. Did he choke?
* Someone in the British embassy in Bonn had the spiffing wheeze of sending Lord Mountbatten to Berlin in a high altitude Comet to see what the Russians would do about it. It was rather reminiscent of the old Beyond the Fringe sketch in which a hapless young man is told by his commanding officer “The time has come for a useless sacrifice. We have chosen you” – and not at all the conventional treatment for the Chief of Imperial General Staff.
* On another occasion de Gaulle referred to Macmillan as “ce vieillard lachrymose”. The Prime Minister squeezed a tear and impressed the young and naïve like Kennedy or the sentimental and class-ridden British television viewer, but it was not an effect which worked on everyone.
* The row simmered on, mainly between Berlin and Bonn. On 20 October the FRG affirmed the right to hold a Bundestag meeting in Berlin but postponed fixing a date. In the event, the next session in the western sectors was to be in 1965.
