To say that kiwis are vigorous would be just touching on their profligacy, so some pruning and tying up of whatever cultivar works in your precincts will keep your glorious, jungle-like tangle within its prescribed confines, although a certain wildness of habit does become most. Let me also just say here that kiwis take a very long season to ripen — anywhere from 150 to almost 300 days depending on cultivar; so in our cooler zones, frost may thwart your efforts, and, as most are male or female types, you will need one of each to culture kiwis successfully. That said, once established, they are exceptionally hardy, uncomplaining brutes, and eaten off the vine, as I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of anyone cooking a kiwi, any will add both color and health to your table.
