LYRES in northern and central Europe have for years constituted a puzzle that has been even further confused by speculative theories. If a solution is possible, it must be based upon sober facts rather than on preconceived ideas.

The district of the lyre reached northward to England, southward to what was later called France and Germany, and eastward to Scandinavia, Finland and Esthonia. The southern boundary is marked by a lyre excavated from the tomb of an Alemannic warrior, which may belong in the middle of the first millennium A.D.; in Wales, lyres were played up until the eighteenth century, and in Finland and Esthonia they are still in popular use.
