Victor Young

(1900-1956)

From the concert stage to Hollywood, Victor Young took an unlikely path to writing music for films. Born in Chicago, he moved to Poland as a child to study the violin. He toured Europe as a concert violinist before returning to the U.S. and entering the world of pop music as a violinist and arranger. He also worked in radio programming in Chicago and New York. Young moved to Hollywood in the mid 1930s where he became one of the country’s most pro-lific composers of film music, composing scores to more than 350 films. He received 22 Academy Award© nominations, receiving four in one year on two separate occasions. He was awarded only one Oscar©, for the score to Around the World in Eighty Days (1956). The award came shortly after his death.
