Here we have the story of the twelve-year-old Jesus going missing while on a trip with his parents to Jerusalem. His parents searched everywhere for him until they found him in the temple courts where he was asking questions of the teachers and amazing them with his understanding. His mother asks him why he treated them in such a manner. He asks why they are searching for his when he would obviously be at his father’s house. His parents did not understand, but Mary kept these things in her heart, where she could consider them later.

Jesus was at the Jerusalem temple. He told his parents that he was at his father’s house. His parents do not understand the significance of his answer, but we are meant to understand that Jesus was referring to God as his father. Since he was at the temple, he was at God's house, which is to say, his father’s house. We, the readers of the Gospels, understand what Jesus means even as his parents do not. But Mary, she could at least look back and gain an understanding of what her son said. What if we were to do the same?

What if Jesus does not mean that as he was the Son of God, that his being at the temple should have been obvious because the temple was God’s, which is to say, his Father’s house? What if he actually meant that they should have gone looking for him at his biological father’s house? That would mean that the temple somehow belonged both to God and this man, or rather this angel posing as a man.
