Stolen Documents

At the sound of George’s voice, the red-haired man spun around. His eyes met Richard Banner’s. He started to run.

“Get him!” George shouted.

George dashed after him. Nancy hesitated. “Do you know him?” she asked Banner.

“He’s a stranger to me,” Banner said simply. Nancy believed him.

“Lost him,” George said when Nancy and Banner caught up to her.

“What’s this about a Peeping Tom?” Banner asked. Nancy nodded at George to tell her it was okay. George blushed. She realized she shouldn’t have shouted in front of Banner without knowing if Banner and the redhead were working together.

“We caught him spying in our cabin window,” Nancy explained. “We chased him, but he got away. Now he’s escaped again.”

Banner frowned. “Don’t worry,” he assured them. “If he’s from around here, I’m sure I’ll run into him again. And I won’t let him get away next time. This is a nice, quiet town. We don’t put up with Peeping Toms.”

An angry voice called from the café terrace. “Hey, you girls! You didn’t pay for your drinks.” A frowning waiter stared down at them.

“We’re coming right back,” George called up.

“We’d better get up there before they call the police,” Nancy said with a chuckle.

The girls said goodbye to Banner and climbed the terrace steps to pay their bill. A few minutes later they were on their way back to the car.

Just as they reached the car, Nancy stopped and slapped her forehead. “Guess what I forgot?” she said. “I didn’t ask Banner about the WEB button.”

George shrugged. “Oh, well. You can find him tomorrow.”

Nancy agreed. “Let’s head over to the Boat Yard Café,” she said. “If that’s okay with you, I mean.”

“Why not?” George replied. “Café-hopping is very trendy these days, right?”

The girls got into the car, and Nancy started the engine. “Trendy is not the word I’d use to describe the Boat Yard,” she said. “Seedy, yes. Trendy, no. So prepare yourself.”

When they stepped into the café, George whistled softly. “You weren’t kidding, were you?”

Nancy glanced around the dingy coffee shop. Donald Wood wasn’t there. Almost all the booths were empty. The only waitress in sight stood hunched over the counter, flipping the pages of a magazine.

Nancy walked up to her.

“Hi,” she said. “I wonder if you can help me. I’m looking for a Mr. Wood. I think he comes in here sometimes.”

“Oh, sure,” the waitress answered. “I know who you mean. He wasn’t here tonight, though.”

“Do you know where I could find him?”

“Well—he’s staying at the Castle Avenue Hotel,” the woman answered.

Nancy and George eyed each other. Another Castle!

“Are you a friend of his?” the waitress asked. “There are always people coming in here looking for him.”

“Not really,” Nancy said. “But I’m supposed to get in touch with him. I guess he’s not from Minosha if he’s staying in a hotel.”

“No, he’s not from around here,” the waitress said. “But he’s been hanging out for a few weeks. Drinks a lot of coffee and reads a lot of newspapers.”

“Where’s his hotel exactly?” Nancy asked.
