GMOs
Don’t believe the hype about genetically modified seeds. To my mind, GMOs are so insidious that they can only be classified a crime against nature. There is emerging scientific evidence concerning the damaging effects of GMOs on our personal health and the well-being of the Earth’s delicately balanced web of life. It scares the living daylights out of me. By all means research into this yourself, but be aware that there’s a lot of misinformation out there, which is funded by the seed and chemical companies that make huge profits by getting these crops into the mainstream.
In March 2015, the World Health Organization’s cancer agency said glyphosate is ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’. Most GMO plants have been created so they can survive glyphosate-based herbicides. That means wherever they are grown, the fields are heavily dowsed with chemicals. These herbicides eventually find their way into our water and into the food chain. GMOs heavily increase the application rates of chemicals onto the land.
Another problem is that wind-blown pollen from these engineered plants cross-pollinates with the plants of organic farmers and gardeners who are growing them for seed. Once the plants have been contaminated with GMO pollen, they can no longer be sold as organic. If this is allowed to continue, we may lose all organic and heirloom seeds. Often GMOs are engineered to be sterile so they won’t reproduce seeds the following year, forcing farmers and gardeners, to buy a new supply of seeds every year. Patenting seeds is just plain wrong! How dare profit-driven companies claim to own something as intrinsic to life as a seed! If we continue down this road of modifying crops and trees, we will either come to a dead end or fall off a cliff.
Unlike chemical or even nuclear contamination, genetic pollution can never be cleaned up or reversed. All future generations will have to cope with the mistakes we are making right now. Please support your local seed-saving organizations. It is difficult for these small groups to hold out against giant multinationals, which are specifically trying to destroy the option of non–patented seeds and GMO-free seed banks.
