CHAPTER ELEVEN

‘IN THE HEART, OR IN THE HEAD?’

Doogie’s theory that drugs were going to be planted in his flat turned out to be absolutely correct, but any notion he may have been entertaining that Nick Martin would be foolhardy enough to do the deed himself proved to be completely off the mark. Not only that, but the miserable junkie who was caught in the act by Angie’s policeman friend Lorenzo Moll and his team claimed he didn’t even know the identity of the person who had hired him. But whoever it was, it certainly was not Nick Martin. The junkie had testified to this after being shown a group snapshot, including Nick, that Angie had taken at a Merryweather staff party a few years earlier.

‘Por cierto, this guy would have denounced Señor Martin if he had been the one,’ Lorenzo Moll told Doogie and Angie on the landing outside her flat as the junkie was being led away. ‘He has a lonely cell and cold turkey to face now, and he’d rat on his own mother if he thought it would make us go easy on him.’ He nodded discerningly. ‘Sí, sí, I know these dope heads, believe me.’

As a consequence of Doogie’s earlier outpouring of his story to Lorenzo Moll, Jimmy Brown had been apprehended by detectives at the airport before being reunited with his passport and allowed to board the plane home. They had made him sign a statement detailing his version of events, and had cautioned him that, if required, he would have to return to the island to give evidence in court. So, no matter how foxy Nick Martin was trying to be, the finger of suspicion still pointed directly at him. For how else, if Nick hadn’t been orchestrating events, would an Ecstasy-toting intruder have turned up at Doogie’s address right on cue, and in possession of a key to the apartment?

This was all still a bit too circumstantial for Lorenzo Moll, though. He and his colleagues would have more work to do before they could charge Nick Martin with a crime that would see him, if found guilty, spending up to ten years behind bars. An immediate search of his flat proved fruitless, however. Nick had been crafty enough not to make the mistake of ‘shitting in his own nest’, as Angie so colourfully put it. Still, Lorenzo Moll did have sufficient reason to haul him in for a grilling, after which Nick Martin was left in no doubt that his every move would be watched from then on. Though free, he was a marked man, the police’s assumption being that, given enough rope, he would hang himself – and, Lorenzo Moll hoped, would take a few more of his rotten ilk with him.

‘I reckon Lorenzo’s bound to report all this to Manolo at the Merryweather office,’ Angie remarked to Doogie over a hair-of-the-dog glass of wine on the apartment balcony. ‘Even if it’s just off the record. Yeah, ’cause they’re old mates, that pair, see.
