Chapter 6
Breaking Free from the Foods That Hold You Hostage
Christie is the single mother of one son and works in a legal office. She has been moderately overweight since her son was born. Her weight is only part of the problem. What bothers her most is her inability to stop bingeing on foods that people bring into the office or snacks that she buys and keeps at home for her son. She feels like a failure because she is completely unable to stop herself from eating these foods. She thinks about her favorite foods all the time. She always thinks she’ll be able to stop after one small bowl of ice cream but inevitably she ends up eating the whole pint. She even hides ice cream from her son so she can have it all to herself. At work, she nibbles on foods brought in for holidays or birthdays when her coworkers are around. After everyone else has left, she finds herself coming back over and over again to get “small plates” until she realizes that she’s eaten a lot more than she intended. After her out-of-control binge, she feels sluggish and her stomach is bloated and full of gas. She has had joint pains and recurrent headaches for the past year that she was told were due to her weight.
Christie finally realized that she was totally unable to stop her food obsessions and came to my office for help. Her food sensitivity testing showed that she was very intolerant of dairy products—the foods she was most likely to binge on. Christie at first embraced these results and stopped all dairy for two months. Her joint pain decreased and she didn’t have any migraines during that period. Then, Christmas came and with it her favorite ice cream—peppermint crunch. She thought it wouldn’t hurt to eat just one small bowl. Unfortunately, one bowl led to another and another. The next morning Christie woke up with severe joint pain and abdominal bloating. Using willpower to stay away from dairy hadn’t worked. All her cravings had come back and she was having trouble learning how to deal with them. Christie needed help learning to accept a dairy-free lifestyle. She needed to work on detoxifying not just her body but also her mind. Over time, she was able to accept a dairy-free lifestyle and her health continued to improve—physical and emotionally.
