The Xerces Blue (Glaucopsyche xerces)

These large organizations work with smaller organizations at a local level to implement conservation initiatives. Habitat protection is critically important in maintaining Lepidoptera populations. Habitat restoration, the act of removing introduced plant species and encouraging growth of native plants, is often a priority. Sometimes more than one approach is needed, such as habitat management along with a captive breeding program. In a captive breeding program, caterpillars are raised in a laboratory where they are protected from natural predators; a much larger percentage grows to be adults. The adults are reintroduced into the wild and the population is carefully monitored. Captive breeding programs have proved successful in the conservation of endangered butterflies such as the Miami Blue (Hemiargus thomasi bethunebakeri).
