The appreciation Mirna saw in Dani’s eyes as they met outside the restaurant warmed her. She was sure her cheeks had turned red. Get a grip, woman. This is the same guy who copied your homework in middle school.

“You look so beautiful,” he said, leaning in to give her a peck on the cheek.

She swallowed and gave him an appraising once over. “You don’t look so bad yourself.”

He was dressed in black slacks and a dark blue button-down shirt that showed off his lean muscled body. His hair was carefully combed, but a light breeze made some of it stick out in different directions, making him look more youthful.

Not bad at all. She bit her bottom lip to stifle further comment and nodded towards the red awning that proclaimed the name of the restaurant as Guillermo’s.

“I think I’ve only been here once in all the years I’ve lived here,” she said.

“Really?” He shot her that formidable smile. “The food is great.”

An unbidden thought floated into Mirna’s head, and before she could stop herself, she gave voice to it. “I bet all the girls you brought here liked it.” She mentally slapped her head. What the heck possessed me to say that?

“Yes.” Dani’s voice was serious. “My mom, my sisters, and my niece did like it.” With that, he opened the door for her. And then added, “My nephew too.”

She couldn’t help but grin at his reply.

They were seated at a table by the window with a perfect view of outside. While they waited for their orders to arrive, Mirna gazed through the glass. The ever-present illuminations and white fairy lights that decorated the streets of Nocturne Falls always made the town look festive. People strolled about the block, and children ran around, their excitement contagious.

“What are you thinking about?” Dani asked when the silence stretched too long.

“I miss this,” she admitted. “I never thought I would.”

He leaned closer, forcing her gaze back to him. “But?”

She sighed. He was always intuitive when it came to her moods. “But, I wish it was as good for me and my family when we were growing up. I wish I didn’t have to learn about the other side of it.”

Dani nodded in understanding, then added, “Do you ever feel like maybe it wasn’t so bad? Like maybe we took it more to heart? Or that the good here can outweigh the bad?”

“I don’t know. But sometimes I do wish it.”

The orders arrived and they dug into the delicious food. She ordered gnocchi alfredo and the creamy goodness didn’t disappoint. She watched as Dani cut into his rare steak with gusto.

Sitting back, she realized that she could forget her troubles, just for a couple of hours. Was that contentment she was feeling? She wasn’t sure, but she liked it...a lot.

They sipped red wine and made silly toasts about things they did as children. Soon enough, Mirna found a pleasant buzz settling in her body and mind.

“Let’s take a stroll through the town,” she said as they made their way from the restaurant onto the sidewalk.
