A MEADOW GARDEN

Don’t even think about the currently popular idea of a meadow, which is a field full of bright annuals in primary colours, like a hanging basket gone rampant. That is an imitation of an arable field before modern weedkillers deprived us of all those flowers, and, of course, it has the arable bit removed. It can look quite amazing but you can’t have one – they are too much work. It is not easy to grow weeds on purpose and you have to start afresh every year. What’s more, it helps to have a plough and something to do the seeding for you (this is called agriculture). What’s even more, you have to hope that boring, coarse perennial weeds don’t get in there and ruin the effect. Or you will have to weed them out to keep it pretty. When people say meadows are hard work, this is what they are thinking of. However a miniature version of the traditional hay meadow is not so bad. You may certainly be able to have a meadow that’s relatively easy to maintain if you have this kind that’s modelled on a hay meadow and not (as above) an arable field. See below.
