“That’ll be it then, Mr. Penhaligon,” said Hotchi. “They’ll light a bonfire beacon on the point, and the ships will mistake it for the real lighthouse on this side of the bay. They won’t have a chance. The ships will be sucked onto the shoals at Rock Pool Beach.”

“Oh, aye,” said Old Amon. “Be just like the old days. My grandfather was a beachcomber. He used to make his living on what were washed up from the wrecks.”

“But won’t the Spatavian ships know the difference between a bonfire beacon and a lighthouse?” asked Penhaligon.

“They’ll be looking for a light, any light. I doubt any of those Spatavians have plotted this coast before.” Amon dolefully shook his head as if the ships were already sunk to the bottom of the bay.

“We must destroy Sir Derek’s beacon immediately,” said Penhaligon.

“And make sure the real lighthouse is shining bright and true,” added Rowan. “Old Amon, you worked the lamp once. Can you help us?”

“Oh, aye,” said Amon.
