14 Guilty Dad

When Jessica and Sophie found a list of chores posted on the refrigerator the next morning, Sophie groaned. “At least there isn’t any housecleaning involved. We don’t have any clues to chase this morning, and the deli won’t open until 11:00 a.m, so helping Mom is no biggie.”

She read through the list again. “This is Dad’s handwriting, so Mom must have called him. She wants us to bring paper towels from home to her shop and to mail some things at the post office. We can do all of that this morning.”

Sophie carried the three-pack of paper towels under one arm. When they were about a block from Great Finds, Sheriff Valeska drove by in a sheriff’s car. She pulled over to the curb, and as they were passing by, rolled down the window. “Are you girls being careful?”

“As careful as we can be when we’re not sure what we’re being careful of.”

The sheriff blinked, then nodded. “It’s surprising to me, but I actually understood what you meant.” She motioned them closer.

Sophie leaned in the car window and asked in a low voice, “Any news on Mr. Jenkins?”

“Nothing.”

Sophie stood so quickly she bonked her head on the window frame. She rubbed the spot and winced. “How is that possible?”

“When I say ‘nothing,’ I mean absolutely nothing. It’s as though he didn’t exist until he started working for Harold Laurence.”

Jessica leaned next to her, “What does that mean?”

Sophie pointed to her chest. “I know. He isn’t who he says he is, right?”

“Most likely. I don’t know any more yet. I hope to soon. In the meantime—”

Sophie interrupted. “Be careful.”

“Yes. We don’t know who he really is. He might be a nice man who just changed his name because he didn’t like it. But he might also have a criminal reason for his name change.”

As they watched Sheriff Valeska drive off, Sophie said, “Let’s hurry up so we can get to the deli.”

“I hope your mom doesn’t ask us to work and make it so we can’t get to the deli.”

“I agree. We need to talk to Tony, but I don’t want to tell her—or anyone else—about what we saw until we know more. It wouldn’t be right for people to think badly about Mr. Donadio if he’s innocent.”

Mrs. Sandoval was busy with a customer when they got back to the shop. They put the supplies away in the back, picked up the mail where she said she’d put it, along with the cash needed to pay for the postage, and hurried back out. Sophie gave a little wave to her mother as she opened the door to leave.

Mrs. Sandoval called out, “Come back here this afternoon. I have a couple of projects for the two of you to work on.”

“We weren’t fast enough,” Sophie said to Jessica as the door closed behind them.

“You could never be fast enough to get out of work with your mom.”

Sophie shrugged. “True.”

Once they’d reached the post office, they waited in line, mailed Mrs. Sandoval’s things, then hurried over to Donadio’s Deli.
