The same day that Lewis wrote to Sayers, he also wrote to Vera Gebbert to mention that Warnie was away in Scotland.156 He did not explain to Sayers why his trip to Ireland had been delayed, but it probably had to do with Warnie’s sudden visit to Scotland. The brothers always planned the August excursions to Ireland together. They normally spent a week traveling together and then separated with Jack spending an extra fortnight with Arthur Greeves. Warnie’s alcoholism had grown much worse over the previous two years. His binges regularly ended with a stay for a few days or more in Restholme or some other nursing home near Oxford that would still take him. In June 1955, Lewis told Cecil Harwood that “after a half year of debauches,” Warnie had “agreed to go into a hygienic bastille at Dumfries.”157 The cure took six months, but Jack said that Warnie might be out in three months with good behavior. As soon as the clinic had a place for Warnie, Jack planned to take him immediately to Scotland. The chance probably came suddenly at the end of July, for Lewis wrote to Christian Hardie on July 31 that he had “been away for a few days.”158 Furthermore, when Lewis wrote to Arthur to explain the change of plans and the revised schedule, he added that Warnie would not be coming to Ireland at all that year.159

Warnie’s sudden departure from the scene left Jack alone at the Kilns with Joy for a prolonged stay with her sons. It was a time of intense happenings. While she was at the Kilns on August 19, Joy wrote to Bill Gresham to say that she had decided to leave London and take a house in Headington, where she hoped to live more cheaply. Her stay at the Kilns ended on September 2, when she returned to London to pack up her things.160 The same day, Lewis landed in Larne, Northern Ireland, on his way to visit Arthur Greeves.161
