SYNONYMS [13.6.1.2.1.1.1.1.2]

The second part [of the defining characteristics of conditioned phenomena] concerns synonyms (13.6.1.2.1.1.1.1.2). This includes (i) synonyms of conditioned phenomena in general (13.6.1.2.1.1.1.1.2.1) and (ii) synonyms of contaminated phenomena (13.6.1.2.1.1.1.1.2.2).

SYNONYMS OF CONDITIONED PHENOMENA IN GENERAL [13.6.1.2.1.1.1.1.2.1]

As to the first, taking “the nature of conditioned phenomena” as the subject for discussion, they are called “conditioned”593 because they are the ground upon which the three times are framed. That subject for discussion is said to be the “basis of conversation” because it is the ground upon which expressive conversations arise. That subject for discussion is said to be “emancipating” (nges par ’byung ba) because it is unquestionably “definitive” (nges pa) and “gives rise” (’byung ba) to nirvāṇa, so that you, after abandoning it, must actualize the nonresidual nirvāṇa. That subject for discussion is said to be “associated with the ground” because it is associated with efficient causes.594
