Dear Professor,
Your letter dated 21 and postmarked 22 December reached me on the 24th. Postal services seem to be improving. Of course, letters from here to Austria must also be sent unsealed. The fact that my last letters arrived in closed envelopes must have been due to the censorship department. Your letters also sometimes arrive sealed, with the censor's stamp on the reverse.
I am glad to hear that your family is well again; I myself am still not quite well; the catarrh refuses to budge. My wife has been ill in bed since Tuesday: influenza, tonsillitis, and a rash like scarlet fever, but certainly benign. I only hope it will not be the children's turn next. My travel plans have become doubtful because of this; at least, they will have to be postponed. There is another obstacle to my visit to Vienna. When I have one or two days free, I must urgently go to Bremen to visit my parents. A 76-year-old sister of my father's,1 who lives with my parents, had a stroke last summer and is now quite helpless and psychologically disturbed, and I must go there to discuss with my parents what is to be done with her. But I am keeping the projected journey to Vienna in mind and shall gladly come as soon as it can be arranged, especially as I know that I may be of some small personal use to you.
I found the scientific part of your letter very illuminating, as far as I could already think myself into it. I am, however, not yet quite clear on some points. I assume the remainder will be equally convincing, once I have mastered it. I should like to keep this for our meeting, which I hope will take place soon.
Your news about Rank is very pleasant; although I do not yet know what he has solved of the Homer problem, I am delighted for him, and for all of us, for his consistency and success. I have no idea yet what will happen about the Habilitation. I hope perhaps during the war to be able to do some work on psychoses, but the case material has not been suitable so far. The [Habilitation] paper I had previously begun has also reached a stagnation through lack of suitable material. I therefore do not yet know what will happen after the war.—I gather from your letter that Ferenczi is well. I have heard nothing from Eitingon for a long time. I had a card yesterday from Jones via van Emden; its tone is as friendly as one could only expect, coming from enemy territory. He does not write anything new. I find Trigant Burrow touching.
I scarcely need to assure you that my best wishes go with your sons and your son-in-law when they go to the front. I send cordial greetings to you and yours!
Yours,
Karl Abraham
