The End of the Romantic Period

Across three chapters, we have dedicated more pages to the Romantic period than to any other era of classical music. And for good reason – there was so much music being written in so many different places that the musical commentators of the time must have had trouble keeping up. There was a real change in the sound of classical music during this period, with the most popular composers ending up writing music with big, rich, lush orchestral sounds. In many ways, Rachmaninov best exemplifies this. When you think back to a composer such as Beethoven, who was still writing music at the start of the Romantic period, it’s easy to see just how much things have changed.

However, if you think the sound of classical music changed during the eighty or so years of the Romantic period, then that is nothing to what happened afterwards. Over the next hundred or so years – taking us right up to the present day – things really start to sound very different indeed.
