Poetic allegory. The hero's visits to the seven pavilions represent steps on his path to spiritual enlightenment. This was painted at the court of the Aq Quyunlu, Turkman rulers of western Iran less famous than their contemporaries the Timurids, but who could obviously command equally fine painters.
