It was a bad night. Winkie barely slept, and when she did, she dreamed of being locked in a cage. She woke up with sore eyes and the itchies worse than the night before. Horace lifted his head, smacked his lips a few times, then rolled over and went back to sleep.
For once she agreed with him. Winkie nestled back into her blankets, though she couldnât get deep asleep, thanks to Ellie banging around in the kitchen. How was it possible for a human to make more noise than a herd of elephants?
After about a million years Ellie went out to milk the goats. Winkie had never been so grateful to hear the screen door slam. Ellie would be busy outside for a while. Who knew, maybe she would even decide to clean out the stalls in the barn.
Winkieâs eyes snapped open. Stalls? Barn? Oh no, she would find Shoo!
She jumped to her hooves and shouted at Horace. She meant to say, âHurry, we have to save Shoo!â But her brain was going too fast, and what came out of her mouth was, âUgh, shoes!â
Horace hopped up and raced out of the room. He stopped at the door and hit it with his paw. Half the door fell off in front of them. âIt must have broken last night when you did hooves of steel.â
âItâs okay. Thereâs enough room for us to squeeze out,â Winkie said as she stuck her head through the door.
Thankfully, Ellie was still busy with the goats. Mostly because the nanny goats were jerks and kept knocking over the milk bucket.
As they passed the goat pens, Horace slowed down.
âAct casual,â he whispered.
They moseyed across the courtyard without Ellie noticing a thing.
As soon as they were inside the barn, they started running again. Jones called out to them as they approached Shooâs stall.
âGot something to tell ya,â the old gray said.
âUh-huh.â Winkie wasnât really paying attention to him. Horace had just opened the stall door and . . .
âHeâs gone,â Jones told them.
