CHAPTER 9
Fly-by-Night
After some poking around at the loading docks behind the museum, Wilson managed to convince one of the shipping assistants to give them the name of the company that delivered the crates from the airport to the museum.
âFly-by-Night Shipping?â Amal said, reading the slip of paper the shipping assistant had given Wilson. âThatâs really the name?â
Wilson shrugged. âI guess itâs supposed to be funny,â he said. âBut it checks out. I found their website. Doesnât seem like a huge operation.â
âProbably cheap,â Raining said. âAll the museums are short on funds.â
The four kids nodded together. Theyâd all heard from their parents about what a tough financial situation the Capitol City Museum Authority was in.
âSo are you going to call them?â Raining asked, giving Wilson a gentle elbow in the ribs.
âMe?â Wilson said. âI have the youngest voice out of all of us. Clementine should call. She sounds the oldest.â
âMe?â Clementine said. âFine. Give me your phone.â Her own phone was often missing or lost or out of batteries or covered in paint. Once sheâd baked it right into a ceramic pot.
Wilson dialed and handed the phone and the slip of paper to Clementine. After a moment, she said, âOh, hi. Is this the shipping company? Do you know what happened to all those bones from China?â
Amal shot Clementine an are-you-serious look and grabbed the phone from out of her friendâs hand. With a dramatic roll of her eyes, Amal took over.
âForgive my assistant,â she said, imitating her fatherâs Somali accent in a very distinguished-sounding way. âSheâs never used a phone before. Iâm calling from the Natural History Museum.â
Clementine glanced at the boys and shrugged.
âAs you may have heard,â Amal continued, âa major shipment has gone missing. Of course weâre all cooperating with a major police investigation ⦠oh? Youâve already spoken to the police? I see. Well, can you tell me what you told the police? Of course. Thank you.â
