My main question upon reading this passage was, What does that last sentence mean? “Blessed is the one who is not offended by me.” I checked a handful of commentaries, and this is what I discovered:

Blessed is he who, in spite of all hindrances, shall find himself able to believe in Me as the Messiah. 6

They are blessed because they take no offense at Jesus, accepting him as the promised Messiah. Many Jews, however, did take offense at Jesus. Some versions say “cause to stumble,” referring to Jews “stumbling” over Jesus because he did not meet their political and nationalistic messianic expectations, even though Jesus’s words and deeds were worthy of the Messiah. So Jesus warned John and all the Jews not to allow their expectations to drive a wedge between them. 7

In beatitude form Jesus encourages John, and everyone else with similar doubts, to remain faithful to him no matter what may come. “Fall away” (offended) is from the key Matthean term skandalizõ, which in various contexts can be translated “take offense, stumble, or cause to sin” and is cognate to our English scandalize. 8

Blessed is the one who is not upset by the way I run my business. 9
